ABOUT US

Our History

Back in 2001, Patrick Ragan and long-time friend and former sparring partner, Paul Ferrari, were working on a management and training deal with NABF Heavyweight Champion Obed Sullivan, along with other top prospects. In addition, long time friend, "Irish" Pat Lawlor, contacted Patrick looking to make a comeback and had asked him for help to make that happen. This sparked the need to set up a training camp in a well-equipped facility. Not many options existed.

With no boxing gyms located in San Mateo at that time, Patrick had a vision of opening a boxing gym and elite training center in San Mateo County. This soon blossomed into a bigger vision of making the facility open to the public so that anyone can reap the benefits of a boxers' workout and train along side of the pros. The idea of bringing the first and only boxing gym and elite training center to San Mateo County, motivated Patrick to move forward with his plan. He began the search for the proper location to house 'Westside Boxing Club'.

This vision has helped to rejuvenate a new generation of boxers here in San Mateo. Since opening its doors in 2005, Patrick has gone on to produce some of the Bay Areas best boxers. This includes Nationally Ranked boxers along with both the Silver and Bronze Medalists at the 2007 Olympic Trials.

Youth Program

Westside Boxing Club has created a program designed to give an opportunity for youth in the city of San Mateo to participate in a positive, nurturing, and structured program.

Each boy or girl who participates in the youth program has two options to choose from, either Boxing Conditioning or Competition Training.

The Boxing Conditioning program teaches the skills necessary to have a positive experience in the gym without having the physical contact of competition. The same dedication, hard work and character building philosophies that are practiced by amateur and professional boxers at Westside Boxing Club are instilled in the youth who are part of the program. Furthermore, this is a great cross training conditioning program that will greatly improve performance in other sports.

Students wishing to compete must first successfully complete the Competition Training program which is designed to push them to the highest level of boxing training and conditioning. A portion of the program will eventually include full contact sparring. This prepares boxers to become part of the WBC Boxing Team, and readies them for competition in USA Boxing sanctioned events at the local boxing level.

Westside Boxing Club's youth program is a safe, positive, life-enriching program for youth ages 7-18. No matter the economic and ethnic background(s), boxing teaches respect, instills discipline, and gives kids a goal to reach for.

The mission at WBC is to encourage and develop good citizenship, leadership, self-esteem and respect through positive interaction from the boxing experience.

We provide a disciplined environment where youth can obtain the tools necessary to set and achieve goals, believe in themselves and become Champions in life.

We believe that making a positive difference in our community ultimately creates a positive difference in the world.
